Growing up, I've read, listened and watched so many stories of a young boy and his rather eventful childhood. His antics, his adventures and his triumphs. A charming cowherd, said to be as dark as the rain bearing cloud, who retained his charm and persona till the very end. Who am I talking about? Shri Krishna, of course.
I tried writing more about him but words failed to do justice. Instead, I'm going to talk about two songs written about him - Madumekkum Kanne and Vishamakara Kannan - composed by Oothukadu Venkata Subbaiyer.
This is my humble attempt at performing both the above-mentioned songs on my keyboard.
Madumekkum Kanne, set to the raga Chenchurutti and talam Adi, is a conversation between Krishna and his mother, Yashoda. Yashoda, being scared for her child's safety, asks her son not to go out and play in the forest. The entire song is about Krishna reassuring his mother about his prowess in the face of adversity. It a laid back song and leaves you with a smile on your face.
Vishamakara Kannan, also set to the raga Chenchurutti and talam Adi, is a ballad about the mischievous Kanha. An entire array of his antics are encompassed within four stanzas - from his singing and dancing to quick witted replies and ploys to steal butter. It is a fast paced song with witty lyrics and has an endearing quality to it. The song simply has a place in your heart.
